So, I did it! I bit the bullet (or rather the golf ball) and survived my first golf tournament. The weekend before the tournament, I have to admit, I was a little nervous. I was getting frustrated on the driving range and the green. Choosing the right club was exhausting, but after a while I just stuck with a few favorites—7 and 5 irons, 3 wood, and that great putting wedge. Another great challenge was trying to find the right outfit. Yikes! But I did, thanks to Gap and T.J.Maxx!
Little did I know that I would meet my five-some in the parking lot when I was trying to figure out where I was supposed to go. They called themselves the “Happy Hackers”! Boy, was I relieved! They were very encouraging with a wonderful sense of humor.
It was a cool, windy day, but I was psyched it wasn’t raining. The first two holes, I learned some key rules of the game and specific etiquette on the fairway and the green. I even learned not to park the cart past the shortest distanced played ball. I was pretty happy I only lost two balls. I have to say, though, by hole 10, I was ready to go home. However, I’m glad I didn’t, because on the 16th hole, I almost won closest to the pin! My drive sounded and looked beautiful and landed only 19 feet from the pin! The principal of the school took that hole with only 11 feet to the pin. After it was over, I got into my car, took a nice long breath and exhaled—being proud I did it and very glad I was done!
Nonetheless, it was quite a success for the school, raising $30,000. Thank you so much to all of you who supported me through prayer, donations, and with sheer love, lessons, and encouragement.
It was a great experience for me. I enjoyed expanding my knowledge of the game, using my body in different ways, and experiencing the perspectives of others who play seriously and playfully. I look forward to my next time at the driving range or playing nine holes.
No matter what stands in your way—fear, finances, or your own disbelief—take the risk, invest in yourself, and you’ll always win. You win by learning something new about yourself and expanding your experiences and making memories.
Be well, think well!
